A Town Steeped in History (and Viking Ships!)
Hawley's story is pretty cool. It all started back in the 1870s with the arrival of the railroad. Named after a railroad official, Thomas Hawley Canfield, the town quickly became an agricultural hub thanks to its fertile land and convenient transportation links.
Did you know Hawley even played a part in maritime history? The Viking ship Hjemkomst, which famously sailed the Atlantic in 1982, was built right here in Hawley's former potato warehouse! You can actually see a monument dedicated to the ship's builder, Bob Asp, right in Bob Asp Park. Pretty dang neat.
