Best of Both Worlds: Small Town Serenity & Big-City Buzz

One of the best things about Hawley is its location. We're just 25 miles east of the Fargo-Moorhead metro area, which means big-city stuff is always close by. Craving a night out at a trendy restaurant or catching a concert? A quick 20-minute drive down U.S. Route 10, which runs right through town, will put you right in the heart of the action. But Hawley isn't just a satellite town – it has its own unique charm.

Exploring Beyond Hawley's Borders

Living in Hawley feels like having your own personal adventure map. Want a taste of some bigger cities? Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota are both within a 23-mile radius. Feeling like some lake time or a little downhill skiing? Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, with its gorgeous shores, endless water activities, and Detroit Mountain, is just 23 miles away. And for those who crave even bigger cities, Bemidji and Minneapolis are within a comfortable driving distance too.

A Town Steeped in History (and Viking Ships!)

Hawley's story is pretty cool. It all started back in the 1870s with the arrival of the railroad. Named after a railroad official, Thomas Hawley Canfield, the town quickly became an agricultural hub thanks to its fertile land and convenient transportation links.

Did you know Hawley even played a part in maritime history? The Viking ship Hjemkomst, which famously sailed the Atlantic in 1982, was built right here in Hawley's former potato warehouse! You can actually see a monument dedicated to the ship's builder, Bob Asp, right in Bob Asp Park. Pretty dang neat.
